Mediamark History

In 2010, in line with our plan to diversify and include digital properties in our portfolio, we rebranded Radmark, a company with a heritage of more than 15 years in radio sales, as Mediamark.

The idea of RadMark was conceived after SATRA, the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, then Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), sold off the SABC radio stations late in 1996. NAIL (New Africa Investment Limited) had been awarded the license for Jacaranda fm and Kagiso Media the license for East Coast Radio and Radio Oranje. At this time, skills were scarce and primarily located within the ranks of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). In order to provide economies of scale and to ensure that available skills were efficiently utilized, NAIL and Kagiso Media decided to establish a Radio Sales House.

About Kagiso Media

Kagiso Media Radio (KMR) is the broadcasting arm of Kagiso Media. It owns and operates two of South Africa’s most successful commercial radio stations; East Coast Radio (serving most of KwaZulu-Natal) and Jacaranda FM (spanning Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North-West Province). KMR also oversees an investment portfolio that has non-controlling interests in four other prominent stations; OFM, Heart FM, Gagasi FM, and Kaya 959.

Kagiso Media has a proud legacy of investing and building purposeful and profitable media companies. Through its founding shareholder, the Kagiso Trust, it has also played a demonstrable part in funding sustainable education initiatives in vulnerable communities in South Africa.

KMR’s two flagship, award-winning stations translate this purpose to action in the form of industry-leading CSI initiatives, while engaging their loyal and growing audiences across multiple platforms. East Coast Radio and Jacaranda FM’s websites regularly rank in the top three best performing radio websites in the country. ECR also operates a specialised digital radio station adjacent to its FM brand called, ‘ECR Gold’.

KMR offers advertisers access to an engaged, loyal, and affluent audience across all its ecosystems, which beyond FM broadcasting includes web, podcast, video, and social media. KMR’s first-party data collection service, SoundInsights, offers businesses tailor-made solutions that help them communicate to the right radio audience with the right message to maximise ROI.

About Kagiso Trust

Kagiso Trust (KT) was founded in 1985 during a period of intense struggle in South Africa. During this tumultuous time, we strongly opposed apartheid by providing support to development institutions and initiatives across a range of sectors. After 1994 we broadened our social vision through the establishment of Kagiso Trust Investments and for the next decade focused on uplifting our communities through targeted education and enterprise development programmes. In 2005, we secured our financial stability through a series of strategic investments and partnerships that strengthened and expanded our capacities to develop people and communities.
